Time for a recap of today’s titanic struggle….
FINAL
Milwaukee 3
Cincinnati 5
WP: W******* (2-2)
LP: McClung (3-3)
S: Cordero (22)
BOX SCORE
POSITIVES
–Smilin’ side of the scoreboard! A much-needed win for the good guys.
–Welcome to The Jonny Gomes Show! The Reds were down 3-2 before Gomes decided to take matters into his own hands. He went 2-4, drove in the run that tied the game in the third, then hit the two-run homer that won the game in the 8th inning. I hope he celebrates with a sombrero later in this post. Stay tuned….
–Johnny Cueto gave up 10 hits, but he only allowed 3 earned runs over 6 innings, striking out 5 and walking 1. Not his best start, but he kept the Reds in the game. I’ll take it.
—Strong outing by the bullpen. Francisco Cordero, Nick Masset, and that other guy retired nine straight Brewers in the 7th, 8th, and 9th. Awesome.
–Joey Votto and Wee Willy Taveras had two hits apiece.
NEGATIVES
–None, really. Good game all around.
ETC.
–After 41 games with Cincinnati, Gomes has a 962 OPS, including a .310 batting average and 6 HR. That’s good. Also good, and surprising, is that he has an OPS over 900 versus both lefties and righties.
–That was really an important win. The Reds didn’t win this lone home post-break series, but a split was the minimum they needed to achieve. Especially since they’re heading out west to play the Dodgers (before heading to Chicago to play a resurgent Cubs team).
–Two roster moves today. First, Ramon Hernandez was placed on the disabled list (knee) and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. Craig Tatum was called up to take his spot on the active roster; Tatum will be making his major league debut when he plays for the Reds.
Also, Robert Manuel was demoted and Jared Burton was recalled to take that spot in the bullpen.
–Okay, Jonny…celebrate!
