Game two of this meaningless interleague series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Bronson Arroyo will take the mound, one year to the day after Arroyo gave up 10 runs on 11 hits in 1-plus innings versus these same Blue Jays.

Ouch. I feel pretty confident that Arroyo will be at least slightly better than that tonight.

The Tavares-less lineup is posted below the fold. Discuss the game here….

Chris Dickerson CF
Jerry Hairston Jr. SS
Joey Votto 1B
Brandon Phillips 2B
Laynce Nix LF
Jonny Gomes DH
Jay Bruce RF
Ramon Hernandez C
Danny Richer 3B

Why have we played the Jays two straight years in interleague? I thought each year we rotated and played a different division?

  2. renbutler

Another reason why Interleague play is a bad idea as currently implemented: there is little rhyme or reason to the yearly rotation. Yes, there is a half-hearted attempt to rotate divisions each year, but it really doesn’t work out that way. This is partly a result of the “natural rivalries” and the unbalanced division sizes.

  3. renbutler

By the way, I haven’t had much reason to be positive here lately, but…

…this looks like it could be a winning lineup tonight.

  4. CarolinaReds

So Dusty figured out that he needs to remove Taveras from the line up…but couldn’t find a way for the only .320 hitter in at Catcher?

  5. Bruce in the OV

It’s a shame about Edinson. I wouldn’t be surprised if a season ending surgery is announced in the coming weeks.

  6. Chad Dotson

    Richar at third? Strange.

Why not Janish at short and JHJ at third? Better defense at both positions, and the offense doesn’t take a hit either (as compared to JHJ and Richar).

    Dusty vexes me.

  7. earl

Kind of odd that Hernandez is going, as Hanigan was usually catching Arroyo’s starts.

  8. CarolinaReds

earl: It’s Dusty Baker…there is no rhyme nor reason to his ways…this is how he confuses the opponent so they can’t win!

  9. Chad Dotson

Good point, earl. I hadn’t thought of that.

Although I’m pretty down on Ramon, I’m not as high on Hanigan as almost everyone else. At some point, however, it’s just absurd for Dusty to refuse to get Hanigan more ABs. The guy just gets on base.

Maybe that’s the problem. Hernandez sure isn’t clogging the bases.

  10. Chad Dotson

Well, this game is starting out exactly like Arroyo’s start last year.

    Two batters, two runs.

  11. Chad Dotson

    Three batters, three runs.

Maybe it isn’t such a good idea to let Arroyo start any games north of the border.

  12. Sean

….hmmm i feel younger watching this

  13. CarolinaReds

I’ve got better things to do that watch this garbage…this is really pissing me off

  14. CarolinaReds

I can’t stand this shit..there is no sense in this

  15. CarolinaReds

I just changed the channel. I refuse to watch a team that has a manager who doesn’t put the best line up in and then has a pitcher who is lights out one time and can’t get an out the other….WTF is wrong with this team?

  16. Jimmy James

Alright! The Jays didn’t bat around in the first inning! Only eight batters.

    Okay, now I really quit.

  17. MiguelSanchez

They should really think about putting the batting practice cage in front of Bronson if they continue allowing him to pitch. Otherwise he may be dead soon.

  18. Jason

As the late-great, Jack Buck once said “I dont believe…what I just saw! I dont believe what I just saw!!”

Disgusting. Speechless. Time to catch up on some Daily Show and Colbert Report.

  19. CarolinaReds

Todd Frasier hit a 3 run HR with Heisey on base…his 6th, now with 40 RBI’s and .329 BA

At least there is hope in the minors :poke:

  20. Jimmy James

I know, Jason. I don’t know why I’m still watching this game. I have hours of stuff DVR’d that I could be catching up on.

But I can’t turn it off. At least, not just yet.

  21. Chad Dotson

Like I said the other day, I just think Todd Frazier is going to be a good major leaguer one day.

  22. mike

I think Frazier is good and was a prospect when he was an infielder
but I’m not sure he’s a productive enough hitter to be an every day corner OFer

was his defense at SS that bad?

  23. CarolinaReds

I don’t remember his defense skills why he was in IF

  24. CarolinaReds

YOu know an older pitcher who’s doing well at AAA is Justin Lehr. I wonder what it would take for them to bring up Bailey again?

  25. CarolinaReds

    Eddie E is 2-2 tonight with a HR and 2RBI’s so that’s good news 😀 😀 😀

  26. brublejr

wow, nothing like giving your team 0% chance to win… :poke: :-((

I guess all that talk about him being traded will stop because nobody is going to want him after this.

  27. Jeff

Arroyo in Toronto = VERY VERY VERY BAD!!!!! :poke: :poke: :poke:

  28. Chad Dotson

Frazier’s defense at short was competent, at best. I really think he could be a fine major league third baseman, but I don’t know why the Reds aren’t playing him there.

With Francisco injured, now seems like a good time to get Frazier some innings at 3B.

  29. mike

Frazier has played 3 games at 3B this season. Not that that is many.

  30. CarolinaReds

No matter how bad Arroyo or anyone else is, they must be put in to play and not sent down if they make a lot of money…regardless of the losses that it causes, brilliant rationale :-((

  31. CarolinaReds

how long b4 arroyo gives that back?

  32. Jeff

Does anyone else remember Arroyos start last year in Toronto???

  33. mike

that is only the 2nd BB by a Reds leadoff hitter this MONTH
    June 1st Dickerson walked
    June 5th Hairston walked

  34. CarolinaReds

at least they’re making this guy throw a lot of pitches..now at 62+

  35. Chad Dotson

Remember when SkyDome was the coolest stadium anywhere? Doesn’t seem like it was that long ago.

  36. CarolinaReds

Remember when Bronson Arroyo had an ERA under 4? It seems like a very long time ago

  37. mike

    Arroyo an ERA under 4?

    that’s unlikely

the last time was after his 1st start of the 2008 season

He did have an ERA under 4 through his first 10 starts of the 2007 season

  38. Y-City Jim

Have Reds hitters ever picked up on a pitcher tipping his pitches or does it just happen to Reds pitchers?

  39. REDS1

To the resident gurus on the page. Why is Bronson so boom or bust? I know his fastball can’t break a window pain. That would explain the bad part. But how is he able to have some real gems.

  40. CarolinaReds

Wow, this team really does suck

  41. mike

this is where it would be handy to have someone like Maloney in the bullpen
has Roenicke pitched since being recalled?
I guess Masset can go long

  42. CarolinaReds

and I ask why he is at 3rd…someone posed the question earlier…sheesh

  43. CarolinaReds

    Yep, just erased those 2 runs…down 5

  44. CarolinaReds

I’m changing it to the news as it is much more uplifting :poke: :-(( :emotion:

  45. REDS1

It is bad when the news is the more uplifting option.

  46. CarolinaReds

mike: Arroyo finished his first season with the Reds with a 3.35 ERA…that is why they signed him to a multi-year contract

  47. mike

    REDS1 I don’t know the answer and I don’t think anyone does.
Last year I saw an article that showed Arroyo got unlucky. Which makes sense since he is VERY hittable and if the defense isn’t getting to very many balls it’s going to hurt a pitcher like Arroyo

But this year his SO rate is WAY down so his poor pitching is for some different reason than last year

And honestly he hasn’t pitched many gems this season
this is his 15th start and he’s pitched 2 really good games and no lights out games

7 (and probably 8 if you count today) of his 15 starts he’s had a game score of less than 50

To help put that in perspective here are the Reds starters and their # of games this season with a game score less than 50 (a pretty bad start)

    8 Owings
    7 Arroyo
    6 Harang
    4 Volquez
    2 Maloney
    2 Cueto
    1 Bailey

the team is 8-22 in those starts. The offense isn’t good enough to bail the pitchers out if they have an off day

now there is one possibility that might explain Arroyo’s 2 gems this season
they were against 2 bad teams. Pitt and Houston

  48. mike

yeah that was 3 years ago when he was 29

    Arroyo’s ERA+
    142 2006
    110 2007
    95 2008
    87 2009

  49. Y-City Jim

Why is Bronson so boom or bust?

Brantley and Welsh seem to think he tips is fastball.

  50. CarolinaReds

Just looked in….this team is pathetic

  51. BigRedMike

Arroyo is a decent #4 starter. The Reds need to do whatever they can to get rid of him, his salary next year is way too much.

  52. Y-City Jim

A game changing hit, George? It’s freakin’ 7 to 2!. At best, it would have two runs and we are still down 7 to 4. A 3-run deficit for this team might as well be double digits.

  53. REDS1

I get tired of the Polyanna from the tv guys. But what else can you say I guess?

  54. REDS1

3 hits tonight. Night after night of no hitting.

  55. Jason

Is this all she wrote for our 09′ Redlegs? I have a sinking feeling here in the glass city, i hope im wrong. Falling under .500 along with the brutal schedule that awaits us in July, etc. etc. :emotion: 🙁

  56. mike

yeah the Philly, NYM, Brewers, LA, Chicago is going to be a tough stretch

  57. BigRedMike

How many times a night does George say “great”?

This is just a bad team. Volquez will be out a lot longer, Dusty is the manager, etc.

Is there really a surprise that this team has a bad offense??

Taveras, Hairston, Hernandez, Rosales, Richar, Gonzalez, Castillo. Not much there.

  58. WORLD

This is Walt J.’s fault. Where is the stud in left field? Why did he, havaing an impressive rookie who deserved a chance, trade for an “established” catcher that Baltimore couldn’t wait to give away? Why not take a chance and trade some of the marketable players such as Bruce and Harang and try to get something in here that resembles a major league team? Peddling fringe players will only get you more of the same……and probably worse.

The boat is going down. It’ll sink in Philly and Gotham City. And I’ll be there in both cities with the boys at dinner and at the bar later listening to all the inside crap about the problems that I won’t be able to repeat here.

Two years ago, I’m sitting with Marty B. and a couple players in Cleveland and Big Bob shows up at Morton’s for dinner and a “chat” with the manager du jour and his petrified staff. Tommy Hume walks by and whispers, “World, the ‘Last Supper'”. Little did Tom know that he himself would be out of a job within a couple days and the Skipper Dave M. was right behind him.

I see the same thing happening in the next stretch of games. How many wins will this non-hitting bunch collect in Philly, New York, Milwaukee, Los Angeles, and Chicago? Without a major shakeup of the team, not many I suppose. Bob can’t be happy seeing about 11,000. in the seats of GABP.

Look for a managerial change. You heard it here.

  59. AnnapolisRed

Depressing news about Edison. This is an example of why a team needs to try and win when they get a chance (not saying this year there is a chance). You just never know when pitchers are going to break down.
