The Reds should sign Manny Ramirez.

There, I said it.

A little part of me is crying inside, but you’re probably right.

How could you betray the ‘speed and defense’ plan? Of course, he could bring some havoc, so what the hey.

Would he play in a small market?

“He doesn’t hustle, dude, and doesn’t have the passion. Ergo, my trusty toothpick says not to sign him.”

Amen, That is about right, just imagine how many home runs he would hit in the GAB. Of course his RBI numbers would be down because Taveras is the “leadoff” man.

But for Bernie Madoff, Manny would be ushering in the new Flushing Meadows ballyard as the leftfielder of the Metropolitans.

That being said, Big Bob doesn’t need a Ponzi scheme to avoid spending some cabbage for someone like Ramirez. And it isn’t all about money although a demonstrated reluctance to dole out copious amounts of the green stuff cultured from Bob’s tomatoes and radish empire is reason enough for the Reds CEO. No, there’s something more at issue here.

Bob likes to be in charge in all aspects of his life. To know him is to understand that his word is the total and absolute law. The very last word. Manny, as evidenced by the way he conducts himself, is anathema to that kind of thinking. Mr. Castellini, to the uninitiated, doesn’t have much of a sense of humor. None really. So the first time that Manny disappeared from left field to take a leak or jogged down to first would be his absolute last. Think Hiroshima. And then Bob would either be on the phone 24/7 with Walt wondering what the status was on his order to get the SOB out of town or else he would be sending a lot of checks to someone who was waived and on another squad’s roster for the minimum.

    Not pretty at all.

Anyway, it would never, ever, ever happen.

    Keep dreaming Reds fans.

    That’s not the *only* way.
Harang, Arroyo, Volquez, and Cueto could each put up an ERA around 3.00 or less.

I saw yesterday that Pujols wants him to come to St. Louis. I sure hope he doesn’t end up there.

I have been thinking the same thing for a long time now, once I realized that we weren’t going to try and sign Abreu.

Manny would instantly make us contenders

CF Dickerson (because he’s better than Willy)
    1b Votto
    LF Manny
    RF Bruce
    2b Phillips
    3b Encarnacion
    C Hernandez
SS Gonzalez (or Hairston I guess?)

With our pitching staff and that lineup, we could possibly win the NL Central

I was all about spending a ton on Manny in a one year incentive based deal that could earn him upwards of 30 mil. But I don’t think that is the only way to win.

  10. GregD

30 mil? You could sign Furcal, Burrell, and still have money left over.

The Reds might contend if Bonds would send Dusty a few cases of that special clear creme to share.

  12. David

GregD – The incentives would push the deal to 30 mil. For example, 1 mil for every .05 BA above .300. 1 mil for every 2.5 HRs above 30. 250k for every playoff AB.

Furcal and Burrell don’t get the fans in the seats. Fans come for Manny. People tend to forget the extra revenue associated with making the playoffs. The Reds would certainly make $30 mil by making the playoffs.

Furcal + Burrell over Gonzalez + Taveras makes the Reds more of a contender than adding Manny alone, IMHO.

I’m very torn on this… 1) If the Reds got Manny (we all know that won’t but anyway) they would definitely challenge the Cubs for the division title and at least be a wild card contender. 2) I feel that it’s against my “baseball morals” to support a clown like Manny Ramirez – he’s a disgrace to the game.

Manny? Burrell? Furcal? They aren’t even fast

Why are we even talking about this. The Reds are one of the last teams Manny would ever sign with. They are going to pay him and even if they offered, he probably doesn’t even know Cincinnati exists. I know, I know it’s fun to discuss and yes, of course he would make the team a probably contender. BUT, and this is a large BUTT, he will never be in Cincinnati Red.
