I fiddled around with a new look for Redleg Nation last night, and I thought I would activate it this morning as a sort of beta test. What do you think? Suggestions?

UPDATE: At any time, I may be reverting back to the original version as I attempt to implement some of these suggestions and see if we can come up with a strong design. If the new design isn’t being used when you are here, check beneath the fold for a screenshot of the 2.0 theme.

And thanks for all the comments. It’s a work in progress, but I appreciate the input. It’s the first time I’ve tried to do something like this.

Be sure to refresh the page to see the random, rotating header images.

  2. Matt Steele

I’m a fan! Good work, I like this new look

Seems like the Google ads are the first things to load though. In fact, the first time I came here and loaded the new page, the very first text I saw — I kid you not — was “Rock Hard Erections.”

What are you telling them about us, Chad??? 😉

IMHO, I don’t see what purpose a calender serves, and the pages box is redundant. Just one column on the right will allow for wider more readable content.
And two Dusty Baker swipes in the banners gives the (false) impression this site is a one trick pony, which is most certainly not!! Keep up the hard work. Not a day goes by when I don’t hit this site at least a couple times.

Love the new look, much more modern and clean looking than the old setup.

  6. Mr. Redlegs

I’m particular to the wild-eyed Mr. Redlegs banner. That’s exactly the expression I get when someone makes the knuckleheaded suggestion of moving a Gold Glover to a position in which he stinks.

  7. Doug Gray

    Thumbs way up Chad!

Nice, clean and simple. Also comes off a whole lot less cluttered than the previous layout.

One more thing Chad, with all of the different headers you have, they are actually alll different sized pictures that are force fit in there. I would probably suggest that you make them all the same size in the header file. I noticed while refreshing that the Chris Sabo header image was originally over 3000 pixels, it took a while to load. It also makes scrolling on the page choppy until the image is off the screen.

    Agreed on redundancy of Pages.

Disagree on Calendar. I like that.

    I’d add Recent Comments, too.

    I like it.

  10. CeeKeR

It certainly has a more modern look to it. Like anything, it’ll take some getting used to but I think I like it. Good work.

  11. Charlie Scrabbles

my assumption with the calendar function is that during the season it will keep track of who the Reds are playing. is that right Chad? because if not, it should.

  12. Mark in CC

It will take some getting used to. It kind of took me out of my comfort zone.

  13. GregD

I like the look and style of the new website. The banner images are great!

Whether it is in this calendar format or a different format, I’d like to see an archive section remain.

I agree that the page box seems redundant to the tabs at the top of the page.

I also agree that I’d add a Recent Comments section. I tend to participate in more message boards than blogs. Message boards bump the newest threads to the top. With an active participation blog like this, and multiple blog entries started in a single day, it would be nice to see where the newest comments are.

Also, since this is only a beta, I’m sure you’re planning to bring over a lot of the other content fromt he old site. Certainly, the links, salary chart, and “big board” were all things I referenced frequently and would like to see continued here. With the links to other websites, you could have those as a separate page.

Is there a way to view 1.0 so that we can compare side-by-side?

  15. Matt B.

Personally, I like the older one. This one has more of a cookie-cutter feel as opposed to the other one, which seemed more original.

I like the new look also, I have redlegnation set as a favorite and visit the sit often. Being a lifelong Reds fan who lives in Pa, I often come to your site for information, news, and other fans’ opinions on the Reds and what they are doing/should do. While I like the new look, I miss having the links to other Reds web pages (i.e. official site, the Enquire, minor league home pages, etc.)readily available. Other than that, I say keep up the good work.

Just to try to answer a few of the comments quickly….

All of the stuff from the 1.0 version will be here whenever I finish importing everything — recent comments, archives, blogrolls, links to everything, RN exclusives, Spotlight Player stuff. I’ve just been trying to figure out how to import that stuff and make it all look right. But it’s coming.

Yes, “Pages” is going to be removed. I forgot to take that out last night.

As for the calendar, I’m probably going to keep it but add a couple of items to make it easier to use that calendar to find stuff in the archives (such as drop-down boxes to change the year and month of the calendar). I’m open to suggestions, though.

I loved the 1.0 design, but we had had it for almost four years and I was getting tired of it. Plus, it was getting a bit cluttered, so I was trying to do something that would look cleaner and easier on the eyes.

  18. Chad

One more thing to address something Doug said above. I know some of the banners are differently-sized. About half of them are one standard size. I’m going to change the rest of them to cut them down to the same size; I uploaded some before settling on the size I wanted, and I didn’t have time to fix them last night.

I’m going to standardize that, though.

  19. brandon

Like the older one better, new one is kinda boring and seems a little too similar to Doug Gray’s set-up.

  20. GregD

How about smilies and editing features (insert a link, bolding, italics, etc)? Is that website functionality/options vs. something you import from the old site?

  21. mike

Why do I love the new design SOOOOOO much? Because the nav/list of stuff is now on the RIGHT of the main posts it is a million times better to read redlegnation on my phone.

It now looks GREAT on my phone.

  22. Nathan in Muncie

I like this a lot more. I just want to make sure we get easy access to the other Reds bloggers out there, not counting myself.

  23. Sultan of Swaff

Now that I’ve had most of the day to live w/ it, I think it needs more RED. White is clean or generic, depending on your tastes.

  24. Matt B.

Agreed, Sultan. I think that one of the things bothering me, too.

  25. Rosey red is creepy

    its bright
    its cool but really bright

  26. Mike Martz

    Nice work Chad.
I don’t post as much as some of the others but I check in here at least once a day to see if there is anything new going on.

  27. Jon

Cool site! Now I’ll really never get anything done!

  28. Mr. Redlegs

Yeah, it’s too virginal. 🙂 Needs more red trim.

Could also make an argument for a countdown clock to pitchers and catchers reporting date or Opening Day.

  29. Kevin

Chad, I think it looks great. Seems like you already decided to, but I encourage you to keep the basic structure at least as you continue to modify it. Keep the overall white feel, I think, it looks good, but some red trim seems altogether necessary. Also, good idea, Mr. Redlegs, about the countdown clock. I need one of those somewhere.

  30. Kevin

Also, it’s a real temptation not to refresh over and over and see all the banners right now, but it’ll be way better if I manage to space it out so I keep seeing new ones over the next couple of weeks (or days).

  31. Chad

We have 24 different banner images at this time, and all the photos were taken by me.

And I just resized them so that they are all the same size.

  32. mhopp

How about a banner that says “The Reds won the Pennant!!” Like it a lot more when it says that. It does look refreshing though. More banners with current Reds and previous stars on the side and maybe bottom.

  33. Chad

And, yeah, I’m going to add some more red to the design, as soon as I get around to it. I love the white space, but I agree that we need more red.

Also, I’m upgrading the underlying blogging software, and I should be able to add a countdown clock after that. I like the idea.

  34. mhopp

Does anyone like a pick up of Jamie Moyer…he is a LHP with a lot of experience?

  35. preach

Marty scared me when I first called it up. I’m out of my comfort zone and don’t know what to think. I have to calibrate myself to be on alert for the big Marty head or I will have nightmares.

  36. preach

Oh, now this time I sign on and see Juan Castro. Are you doing this on purpose to me?

  37. Mr. Redlegs

Could we also get a box of fresh ‘n hot ones from Krispy Kreme?

  38. nick in va

I like the “clogging the bases” but I think maybe it should be “Clogging the internet since 2005.” Kind of a dumb thing, but either way I think it’s funny.

  39. Chris

Is the screen-shot the same design you emailed me yesterday? Because it looks totally different than it did when I looked at it before (the two righthand columns were shoved to the bottom of the page). I think I was using the Google Chrome browser, which probably explains it.

  40. Chad

Yeah, the screenshot is the same design. Does it look better or worse than what you saw?
