July 4, 1989: Tom Browning comes within 3 outs of his second perfect game in the Reds 2-1 win over the Phillies in Philadelphia. After the first 24 Phillies were retired Dickie Thon led off the 9th with a double. After Steve Jeltz singled to score Thon, John Franco came in from the bullpen to record the final two outs.

In his final season with the Reds, Franco had a 4-8 record, 32 saves, and a 3.12 ERA. Browning was 15-12 with a 3.39 ERA.
