June 20, 1965: Sammy Ellis is both the winning and losing pitcher in a DH against the Cubs at Crosley Field. Ellis started the first game and was rocked for 6 runs in 4 1/3 innings of an 8-5 loss. After showering, Ellis went home without permission from the ball club and received an urgent message to return. He entered the nightcap with two outs in the 9th and the Reds trailing 8-7, and retired the only batter he faced. The Reds rallied for two runs in the bottom half of the frame to earn Ellis a 9-8 victory.
