July 27, 1997: In an unexpected move, Jack McKeon replaces Ray Knight as manager of the Reds.

McKeon, who had been the Reds senor adviser of player personnel since ’93, was named interim manager . On September 19, the position was made permanent, and he was given a contract through the end of the ’98 season. Reds management hoped that McKeon’s laid-back personality would have a calming affect on the Reds young players.  Previously, McKeon had been manager of the Royals (’73-’75), A’s (’77-’78), and Padres (’88-’90). He was also the GM of the Padres from ’80-’90, and put together the club tha won the NL pennant in ’84. Knight went back into TV work with ESPN.
