21 year-old Homer Bailey, (Reds #1 – 2004) pitched 7 very strong innings giving up just 5 H, 0 BB!!!, and an ER with 9 Ks.  He has a 1.89 ERA with 43Ks, 21 BB, and 32 H in 52.1 IP. He threw 101 pitches in 7 innings.
23 year-old Joey Votto (Reds #2 – 2002)  went 1 for 3 with a BB and 2 RBI. He is hitting .312/.426/.489
25 year-old Richie Gardner (Reds #6 – 2003) pitched 5 innings giving up 3 H, 3 BB, while striking out 5. In his 2nd start at Chattanooga he has yet to allow a run.
25 year-old Carlos Guevara (Reds #7 – 2003) recorded 2 K’s in an inning for the save. He has a 2.10 ERA with 33 Ks, 19 H, and 7 BB in 25.1 IP. Apparently he is being punished for something, because leaving this kid in Chattanooga is just silly at this point. These numbers are better than what Salmon and Coutlangus were doing here at Chattanooga at this time last year.
24 year-old Calvin Medlock (Reds #39 – 2002) gave up a H in an inning of work. His ERA is 3.03 with 41 Ks, 24 H, and 3 BB in 32 IP. Somebody called it ludicrous to want these two guys in the Reds bullpen. Again these numbers are better than what Salmon and Coutlangus were doing at Chattanooga last year. Would you rather pay Medlock and Guevara $400K or whatever the minimum is for a 4 ERA or Stanton and the other old dudes Millions for a 4 ERA?ÂÂ
BTW, in the 90’s when the Reds had good bullpens this is EXACTLY what Leatherpants would do. Bowden was a failure in many aspects, but he always built good bullpens, FOR almost nothing, and when they became expensive he dumped them and brought up more young guys.
