I mentioned to my brother this afternoon that Brandon Claussen had to be injured. He was pretty good last year, and he’s at an age this year when pitchers typically take a decent step forward. We had every reason to think he’d be better than average this season.

Soon, I heard the news: Claussen has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with rotator cuff tendinitis in his pitching shoulder. Hope he gets completely healthy.

Just in case you thought the Reds bullpen couldn’t get any worse, they are set to recall Mike Burns. Yes, the same Mike Burns who has been with the Reds for two stints already this season, compiling a brilliant 8.71 ERA. Career ERA near 6.

Sheesh. Why not bring up someone who has a fighting chance of being decent? Scott Chiasson, perhaps. Or Jason Standridge. Or Mike Venafro. Or Jake Robbins. (Were it up to me, I think it’d be Standridge, with Burns being cut to make room on the 40 man roster.)

No, they bring up stinkin’ Mike Boo-urns (as he shall forever be known in the game threads).

I hope I’m wrong. I hope Boo-urns pitches great and becomes one of the anchors of this bullpen for the next few seasons. I hope. But I’m not holding my breath.

The funk the Reds are in does not bode well for the upcoming four at Shea and three at the Jake, let alone todays game with the ChiSox.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Claussen has been hurt for a while. And as usual the Reds tried to have him work through it. Thats the way Doc Hollywood works.

I guess I shouldn’t have been suprised that Claussen was injured, especially the way he had been pitching for most of the year. After the improvement he had shown last year, I really thought he was in for a big year.
