Last minute transactions are occurring now, getting the roster in shape for Opening Day. Marc Lancaster has all the details, but here’s the short version:

After being sent to Louisville last week, the Reds recalled outfielder Chris Denorfia. Good news for the young guy.

Relief pitcher Ryan Wagner, on the other hand, has been sent down. I like Wagner, but this might be the best thing for him.

Jacob Cruz, Brian Buchanan, Frank Menechino, and Quinton McCracken have been sent to minor league camp. I had hoped Buchanan would make the major league roster, but I can’t complain about Denorfia making the team. I expect McCracken to be recalled to Cincinnati as soon as he’s healthy, with Denorfia probably being sent down.

Everyone likes Jacob Cruz, but he just isn’t that good. His value lies in the fact that he’s cheap, and that he doesn’t complain about being a pinch hitter.

Finally, catcher Jason LaRue and pitcher Paul Wilson were added to the DL.

Lancaster has this note about the final roster spot:

There is at least one move coming after the game. Considering Dane Sardinha and Andy Abad are the only ones left, and Abad would have been reassigned if they weren’t going to take him, I imagine we’ll see Sardinha designated for assignment and Abad’s contract purchased. That one, I was not expecting.

I’m not sure what Abad brings the team over Buchanan, but it’s the fifth outfielder spot, and not anything to get worked up about.
