At tonight’s game, Raquel Aurilia will be donating copies of her “CD single” to the first 300 people who donate $5 to Katrina relief.

First, I appreciate the gesture 100%. It’s nice to see the players’ wives doing what they can, and I presume that Rich Aurilia joined the other Reds in donating a day’s pay – much sooner than most other athletes. And without, it should be notied, the idiotic and trivializing “performance-based-incentives” (Serena Williams will donate $100 for every ace she serves in the U.S. Open).

While I’ve never actually heard of Ms. Aurilia, I’m sure she’s a talented singer.

All that said, the self-importance and unintentional comedy in
this press release
is unparalleled.

Music is about healing. It has the power to soothe broken souls, especially in times of crisis and tragedy. In the wake of the death and destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina, Raquel Aurilia, wife of Cincinnati Reds second baseman Rich Aurilia, has decided to go beyond simply donating funds for hurricane relief.

An emotionally uplifting piano-driven ballad, “The Need” offers a ray of sunlight in dark days.

You really need to read the whole thing. Then donate what you can to the Red Cross.

Wow. We should send her to Darfur.

In all seriousness, I have been very impressed with the Reds players and the organization as a whole. They have been ahead of the curve when it comes to helping in the face of this tragedy.

Makes you proud to be a Reds fan, and we don’t get to say that very often anymore.
