Reds first round pick: Jay Bruce, high school outfielder. But from Texas!
The radio said he’s a pitcher, but mlb.com lists him as an outfielder.
The local (San Diego) sports station was reading off the first 15 picks. The announcer was all business until he read the Reds guy. He actually laughed on the air and said, “yeah, that’s gonnna help,” before moving on to the #13 pick.
Other info:
-Baseball America ranked #9, and said ” Unheralded at the start of the year, his five-tool potential has won over scouts, with the Mets having interest at 9.”
-Signed with Tulane
-A Brewer fan site says:
“Talented outfielder with solid tools across the board. His tools are probably highlighted by his pure hitting ability, and he makes consistent, hard contact with a short yet powerful stroke that produces lasers to all fields. He also has displayed intriguing power potential. He has good speed and range in the outfield, and a solid arm that should make him a perfect fit in center or right field.”
Now, the question is, will the Reds come up with the cash to sign him, or will he go on to college and reenter the draft in a year or so.
